Cadetships

  • Deck Cadetship (HND, FD, BSc)

  • Engine Cadetship (HND, FD, BEng)

  • Electro-Technical (HND, FD, BEng)

Cadetships provide a structured, career-focused pathway for individuals training to become officers at sea. Combining practical shipboard experience with academic study, cadets work under the guidance of experienced officers while completing a program that meets international maritime standards. Cadetships are available in deck, engineering, and electro-technical disciplines, and often include sponsorship from shipping companies, covering training costs and providing a salary while at sea.

Cadets gain hands-on skills in navigation, ship operations, engineering systems, or electrical and electronic maintenance, depending on their chosen pathway. Successful completion of a cadetship leads to professional certification and eligibility for officer roles, offering a clear progression from trainee to Junior Officer and onward to senior positions. Cadetships are widely regarded as one of the most effective routes to a rewarding and globally recognized maritime career.

Marine apprenticeships provide a practical, career-focused route into the maritime industry, combining on-the-job training with classroom learning. Apprenticeships are available in a variety of seagoing and shoreside roles, including deck and engineering positions, marine electrics, shipbuilding, port operations, and marine hospitality.

Apprenticeships are typically structured across three levels:

  • Intermediate Apprenticeships (Level 2) – Entry-level programs designed for those starting their maritime career. Apprentices learn foundational skills in their chosen area while gaining hands-on experience under supervision.

  • Advanced Apprenticeships (Level 3) – For those who have completed Level 2 or have equivalent experience. These programs develop technical expertise and practical problem-solving skills, preparing apprentices for more responsibility and potential progression into supervisory roles.

  • Higher Apprenticeships (Level 4 and above) – These combine advanced vocational training with academic study, often leading to professional qualifications. Higher apprenticeships prepare individuals for senior technical, operational, or officer-level roles in both seagoing and shoreside careers.

All levels emphasise industry standards, safety, and practical competence, providing apprentices with recognized qualifications and clear pathways into long-term maritime careers.
